What is Eid al-Fitr?
Eid al-Fitr is the first day of
Shawwal and one of the most important Muslim holidays. According to the
traditions narrated by the Shia imams, Eid al-Fitr is the Eid of those who’s
fasting and worship have been accepted, and therefore it is an Eid for Muslims
to gather and praise God. Fasting on Eid al-Fitr is forbidden and paying Zakat
al-Fitr is obligatory on Muslims.
There are customs and rules for
the night and day of Eid al-Fitr. including staying up late, praying and
reciting the Quran, taking a bath and saying special takbirs. Islamic countries
declare two or more days off on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr. Muslims hold Eid
al-Fitr prayers in congregation and celebrate according to their customs.
Importance of Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr is the first day of
the month of Shawwal, and in Islamic traditions, it is introduced as the
fasting of God's rewards, the day of reward for good deeds and the day of forgiveness
of sins. According to Imam Ali (as), Eid al-Fitr is the Eid of someone who’s
fasting and worship has been accepted by God.
In another narration narrated by
Imam Reza (as), it is said that the day of Eid al-Fitr is set so that Muslims
can gather on that day and praise God for the blessings he has given them, and
therefore Takbir in its prayer is more than other days are placed.
